Welcome to another episode of Modern American Realtor. In this weeks show the Wright brothers discuss public relations with special guest and veteran PR specialist, Maggie Habib. According to Habib, PR opportunities are often overlooked by agents, who feel their story or expertise is not worth sharing. However, there are many platforms and publications relevant to small businesses, and providing expert insight may result in gaining valuable publicity for the company.
Identifying opportunities for publicity through local business journals, broadcast agencies, and industry media outlets is an important initial step for agents and small businesses. When beginning PR efforts, agents may find that smaller publications provide greater value, as there is an increased likelihood of reaching a targeted audience. Additionally, Twitter serves as a useful platform for connecting with key influencers within a business sector.
Media outlets and publications often use editorial calendars to identify upcoming topics and subjects for future publications. This schedule serves as a valuable resource for agents and small businesses to locate public relations opportunities. Maggie suggests obtaining an editorial calendar from key media sources within your demographic and reaching out to journalists to offer insight and expertise where possible. When establishing contact with a journalist, aim to keep communications concise; focus on providing valuable knowledge on the topic as opposed to information about yourself.
In addition to media acknowledgment, industry awards and speaking events offer tremendous opportunity for additional publicity. Casey acknowledges that while he initially struggled to recognize the opportunity and value in participating in such events, through personal experience he has come view them as eminently worthwhile. Utilizing such occasions as stepping stones enables agents to establish a reputation, building towards larger media recognition.
Discovering publicity opportunities through PR can seem like a difficult task. However, there are a number of simple tactics agents can pursue to increase the efficacy and ease of PR efforts. When contacting a journalist, concentrate on providing value and insight to the topic rather than focusing on your business. Additionally, recognizing small media attention as an opportunity for growth is an effective method of increasing credibility and expanding towards a larger audience.
